Mission:
Operation Kakori
Location: Bridge, USS Valiant / Proximity to Breyet Nor.
Timeline: Six Hours after Menacing Shores
Red condition lights bathed the bridge of the Valiant while all other decks, corridors and compartments aboard had panels that indicated that the escort ship was under battle conditions. Telemetry from the station hadn’t outwardly changed and, somehow, the data dump was still continuing, indicating that that part of the mission (at least) had been a success.
Rhu sat easy in his command chair, trying to project that command presence and calm that they spoke of at Command school.
Thus far in the notes for the log, things had mostly gone as expected with this mission. He’d been waiting for the other shoe to drop though and the capture of half of Pioneer’s Intelligence officers would definitely change everything.
The Marine CO had split his force to rescue those officers and to carry forward with the mission to grab Quaid.
And everyone knows it’s always a good idea to split your party.
For the Valiant’s part, Dayna had volunteered to go tell the Colonel of the change and Rhu wasn’t sorry about that. Giving someone like the Colonel bad news and then trying to rein in the man’s likely response was right in an Executive Officer’s wheel house. If Rhu had went, it might have been construed as reminding the Marine that he couldn’t go on a one man rescue mission.
Rhu wouldn’t blame him if he tried, but as CO of the Valiant, he’d have to sit on the Colonel if necessary.
The crew had been working quietly for the past hour and Rhu double checked the timers he had running to make sure that his people were rotating properly and the stewards had been cycling through to the small fresher station with coffee and pastries. He was about do for a stretch himself when the telemetry from the station changed.
“Captain,” Mishka said, “Breyet Nor internal security just flashed to an intruder alert status and sensors are reading activity in their operations center.
“Acknowledged, Lieutenant,” Rhu said as he processed. Things would likely start moving faster. The Valiant was five thousand meters off in the station’s nadir. His standing orders had been to keep the Valiant’s profile minimized facing the station, even with the cloak. Helm officers had the further difficult task of monitoring the traffic around the station as it might bear toward them and adjust the Valiant in relation to them.
Luckily, the station didn’t have a lot of traffic moving through and the eddies of plasma playing through the system kept most of those ships in predictable areas and transit lanes. As it was, the plasma energy was giving the ship’s ablative armor a workout.
With the ship ready, Rhu began thinking about the extraction and escape. There was an overall plan, but that had went in the bin when the operatives had been discovered. The recovery of the Pioneer’s personnel was likely to get tricky.
And maybe impossible. The sealed ordered he’d received indicated that Valiant was to retrieve Quaid and not be detected. Everything else, including the Pioneer personnel were Expendable.
Technically, the Valiant and crew were expendable, but the data they’d pulled from the station meant they were less so now. Rhu had no doubt Valiant would get out, but he owed it to the Pioneer’s marines and intel people to do everything possible to get them out.
His sealed orders had explicitly stated that he wasn’t to start a shooting war. Nor could he let the Marines do so.
Rhu remembered his surroundings just before he let a sigh escape. Behind him, he heard the hatch cycle and he looked over his shoulder to see Dayna return. When she met his eyes, he smiled slightly and asked, “How did it go?
"He is taking it as expected. I have ordered the transporters taken offline, and the guards placed on the shuttles. That is unless you or I superseded that order. I fully expect him to try to get down there. Speaking of. Do we have a way to get them all home?" Daynah wanted to add a sarcastic remark, well rather it was Ral who wanted to add the remark. But, Daynah kept him quiet.
"Doesn't matter. We have the data, so Valiant's primary mission is complete," Rhu said frankly. "The Cure's mission was to get Quaid, and they apparently made a dog's dinner out of that, as they say." Pursing his lips he said, "That being said I suppose we should find a way to get their bacon out of the fire. They need to make it to their shuttle though. While they're on the station, there isn't much we can do. We might get a volley or two off but we can't take out their power relays, much less their weapons turrets. So, I'm open to ideas."
Looking at his bridge team, he said, "If they get off that station, how do we grab them without being seen? Can that even be done? Colonel Galen?"
"We cannot transport while cloaked..." Galen began and his voice trailed off when Kay spoke up.
"If I may?" Kat interrupted. "I have an idea."
Daynah stepped around the Bridge to the Science station. "Lieutenant now is not the time to stand on ceremony. If you have something let's hear it. Whatever you have has got to be better than the wait and see plan that is currently in play."
"The ship can't use transporters without dropping the cloak," Kat began. "But we can use a shuttle. All we need to do is start up one of the shuttles in the bay and use those transporters to beam the team aboard. We can only get two or three at a time, but it should work. I should be the one to do it because if anything goes wrong, I can fix it on the fly." She paused for a moment. "However, since the shuttle will have to remain in the bay, there will be some radiation buildup, so the team will need to see the doctor. But as they'll have to leave the shuttle right after transport due to space, exposure shouldn't be excessive."
"It should work, I was thinking of using one of the shuttles to augment the Valiant's power.." Richard said. "But your idea is simpler, Lieutenant."
Rhu thought he'd picked up what Kat was getting at said, "Katya, get to bay two and begin your preparations. Take whoever you need."
Kat nodded. She made a few quick notations on her PADD.
Glancing over his shoulder, he said "Dayna, being running stress field analysis simulations and work with Lieutenant Davi. The shuttle will need to be clamped down and we'll be dealing with radiation protocols on all surrounding decks. We need to know how fast that will happen and you'll need to work with Colonel Galen on how that might affect the Cloak."
Looking over to the engineering repeater station, Rhu said, "Richard. Those radiation emissions are going to have to be vented even more carefully than we already are. Once this is wrapped up, we're going to have to get out of Dodge pretty quick."
Richard nodded in acknowledgement and returned to the Bridge Engineering station. Hopefully the plasma activity around the Station would help to mask the radiation from the Shuttlebay. But, if not, a good engineer always had a few ideas up his sleeve.
Daynah rose and looked toward the Romulan. "Colonel, keep us in the loop via comms. Let me know the status of the cloak." She looked at Katya. "Looks like we have our work cut out for us. Let's get those people home."
