Mission:
Avan's Colony
Location: Cargo Hold
Timeline: Right After Back On Track
Amy and Kat beamed to the Adelaide with the intent of taking Zinna to the cargo bay Zuub was using to treat the colonists. She needed a real doctor to check her injuries and she would likely need whatever help the other colonists were getting. Plus, the two officers probably needed a quick check themselves after their little adventure into the mine.
Kat wanted to get a quick check and take a shower. She'd prefer a bubble bath, but that wasn't possible on the Adelaide. And she and Amy would need to report to the first officer as well. She wasn't looking forward to that.
As the transporter beam began to drop, an alarm pulsed throughout the bay and the computers voice sounded, "Warning. Biogenic weapon detected. Level four quarantine protocols engaged." Dr. Zuub please attend." Around the recent arrivals, a forcefield hummed into existence and the sound of the cargo bay hatch automatically sealing could be heard.
Kat looked at Amy. "What biogenic weapon?" They weren't aware of encountering any. All they found was a wounded colonist in a suit and a team of dead miners.
Amy coughed, covering her mouth, wincing due to the rope burn on her hands.
"I don't know what it is talking about, I would really like a drink of water. Computer, can we have some water? Can we get a shower?" making a grimace "I really would love to get that stale water taste out of my mouth."
Her stomach growled loudly. "Oh, even something to eat."
Kat took a ration bar out of her pack and handed it to Amy. Then she gave her a small bottle of water. "It's not much, but it'll help until we get someone to figure out what's going on." In the meantime, she took out her tricorder and scanned the three of them to see if she could find out what caused the alert.
Zuub arrived on the scene. Her antennae stood rigidly at the top of her head. "Computer, explain the biogenic weapon warning. Also, please give me readings on everything and everyone in the fields." She looked at Kat and Amy and told them, "I will get to the bottom of this issue."
Amy gratefully accepted the ration bar and water, taking a sip of the water, and eating the ration bar. "Thank you, Kat. And this really tastes good. Hunger is definitely the best sauce as the saying goes." happily eating the ration bar, and taking sips of water.
"You're welcome," Kat said to Amy.
Then she turned to Zuub. "Thank you, doctor. We don't know what triggered the quarantine. A team of miners called for help and the woman we brought back was part of a team that went to help them. I learned there had been no word from either team, so when the air filters were cleaned out, Amy and I volunteered to check on them. This woman is the only survivor."
"Doctor," the Computer responded. Unknown Klingon subject has tags of a biogenic weapon similar to cobalt disselaide. Subject identified as Ke'dar, Daughter of Eraq and is currently contained within the transporter buffer and you have five minutes, twenty three seconds before their automatic return. Two crew-members that were part of that transporter package are under quarantine per SOP." After a few seconds more, the computer said. "Notification. This subject is an existing prisoner on the Averlene detainment center on planet Chenjy."
"What?" Kat shook her head. "She said her name was Zinna. How could she be a prisoner on Chenjy and be here at the same time?" That didn't make sense. Unless... She shook her head. She'd have to do some research after the current crisis. "I thought she was only injured from the crash and needed a doctor."
"And you became infected somehow by talking to her or otherwise interacting with her," Zuub advised in her soft, wispy voice. "I'm afraid until there is a cure, that you would have to remain here in quarantine, that is unless you wish to return to the planet."
Zuub considered the matter, as her antennae wobbled and then twittered. "That actually may not be a bad idea. As you are infected, perhaps you could gather more information from this Zinna, so I could find a way to cure your ailment, and likely hers. What would you prefer?" Zuub asked. Only her antennae twittering betrayed any sense of emotion from the doctor.
"Okay let me get this straight." Amy having finished her ration bar. "We" motioning towards herself then towards Kat. "We might have been infected with some illness due to our exposure to rescuing Kinna or Zinna? Whatever her name is." She frowned. "And you are recommending that we be sent back to the planet."
"Look, Commander, what with your knowledge and predisposition in experimenting with different things. I am sure that you can or could come up with something. Or even get a closer look as to what we truly have. We could actually be suffering from being exposed to the planet's environment. Just... don't send us back to that planet."
Zuub's antennae leaned forward, drooping slightly. "I'm only offering what standard operating procedure is in a case like this. When someone comes on with a quarantine malady, they are to be given the option of returning back. I suggested that you take this option because you might be able to gather more information since you are already exposed as opposed to sending down other crew members that might put further people at risk. I am a doctor, and as much as I experiment, I still have a Hippocratic Oath to observe," Zuub informed both Kat and Amy.
"If you choose not to do that, then I need you to recount every little detail of your excursion so that it may provide me with a clue as to how to cure this new malady that set off these alarms."
"I'll be happy to give you everything I did," Kat said. "But if we're sent back to the planet, there's a good chance we'll be there for a while and I don't want to stay here any longer than I have to." Besides, as angry as the people outside were, she wasn't sure if any of them would survive long enough to get through the quarantine.
"Alright," Zuub answered, her antennae drooping but leaning forward. "What happened immediately after beaming off the ship?"
"I went to work in the maintenance area," Kat began. "After running a few diagnostics, I cleaned the air filters because they didn't have any replacements. It's a temporary measure, but it helped. Richard wanted to see if he could find some way to set up an alternate filtration system." She paused and ran a hand through her hair. She really needed a bath. "Since I wasn't involved with that, and I'd been told there were miners trapped in a mine and the team that went to rescue them crashed, I asked if I could take a car out to help them. Bryan Casteel showed me a rail car he had that would do the trick. So, I asked Amy if she was free to join me."
Kat wasn't sure if she was giving enough detail, but Zuub could ask if she had any questions. "When we got to the site of the crash, there was only one survivor. Zinna. I did what I could to help her. She was conscious when we got there, but after I determined she wasn't in any danger at the time and we were close to the mine, we made her comfortable on the car and kept going. By the time we got to the mine, she was still stable. So, Amy and I went inside to find out what was going on and if we needed to call for help."
She paused again, looking at Amy. "All the miners were dead. Then lava began to enter the chamber, so we left. When we got back to the maintenance center, everyone was gone and we called you. We put our suits on in the center and took them off there as well. We only had minimal contact with her." And now Zinna was stuck in the transporter buffer.
