Unrest along Romulan Star Empire Border

Tensions within the Federation Senate escalated again today when reports from Star Fleet and member worlds along the Romulan Neutral Zone reported increased pirate attacks in the past month. Star Fleet Admiral Bracius Forth reported that no less than fifteen merchant and private ships have went missing within the past month and two colonies near the Heze system reported being raided by Romulan Pirates!!
When Star Fleet arrived on the scene at the Colony of Gaia III, stunned colonists reported Romulan pirates emptied storehouses of food and medical supplies as well as the absconding with the colonies industrial replicator. In addition ten persons from among the colonial population of fifteen hundred have went missing. One eye witness claimed the pirates arrived in Romulan shuttles and beamed their booty away while armored troops corralled led people in three separate villages and while freebooters ransacked their homes.
Colony spokesman, Ono Wyme stated that the Federation and namely Star Fleet needs to do something about the whole matter. Just three months ago, the Federation representatives from Belarus had been through the colonies, encouraging trade with the Romulans and now this. To quote Commissioner Wyme, “If that blustering idiot comes back through here, he may be told to stay and lend a hand rather than just try to make friends with Pirates!!”
Representative Carvis of the Bolian’s stated that on the whole, trade with the Romulan’s across the border has been mostly amicable and claims that he believes the Ashen Hand is behind these raids, trying to hurt relations between the former Star Empire and Federation. He further stated that the Former Empire is fractured enough that he doubts very much that one of the factions could be responsible for any pirate actions.
Fleet Admiral Forth stated that more ships have been routed to patrol the Neutral Zone and claimed ambassador’s for the three main factions of Romans have all denied any knowledge, nor culpability in the matter.
However, on condition of anonymity this reporter has spoken to other representatives within the Federation, Star Fleet and Fleet Intelligence and all claim its more than possible that one or the other of the Romulan factions is looking to dump dirt on the others.
From this reporters point of view Star Fleet, the Federation and even the Romulans have no idea what is going on and are scrambling to find out AND not appear to look weak.
And that’s just what it looks like. Weakness. Say what you will about the old RSE, but pirate activity was nearly non-existent. And if pirates are found, they will be dealt with.
In other, related news. The Ferengi Alliance has offered ships to the Federation to help patrol the Neutral Zone, stating they have Daimon’s who are eager to expand trade through the region and have ships that can handle any pirate. Daimon Fesch, current ambassador to the Federation Council on Earth stated that better actual ships that can keep trade flowing AND defend the area, for a fee of course, than supposed ships, promises and vague threats to try and warn off pirates. There’s even a wild tale of some Romulan faction putting a cloaking device on a Federation starship. Can you believe that? Like the threat of one ship with a cloak can deter vermin like this?”
Rumor is what it is, but this reporter has not been able to confirm anything like that. Perhaps time will tell.
